The 5th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup opened on Friday 30thSeptember 2016, in Jordan. Three African countries; Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon took part in this tournament which ended on the 21st October. For 21 days, 16 teams from around the world faced off in various matches. Cameroon was the first African team to enter the arena. The Indomitable Lionesses met Team Canada at Al Hassan International Stadium Irbid: (2 -3), in favor of the Canadian team. Saturday 1st October 2016, Ghana was opposed to Japan at Prince Mohammed International Stadium in the city of Al Zarqa (0-5), while Nigeria played against Brazil in Amman (0-1). Monday, October 3rd, Cameroon’s second match against Venezuela ended with the score (1-2). Tuesday October 4th, Nigeria had a draw (0-0) against England, while Ghana recorded its first victory against the USA (2-1) and later qualified for Quater Finals. Unfortunately the Black Maidens, lost to Korea DPR in the last eight.
The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) acquired the marketing rights of this important sporting event following a call for applications launched by FIFA. It is in this context that matches of all African teams involved in this tournament were being aired by African national Televisions.
Created in 2008, the U-17 Women's World Cup holds every two years. North Korea won its second throphee (5-4) against Japan. It should be recalled that the Japaneese won the 2014 edition which was played in Costa Rica. Two other countries have already lifted the prestigious trophy, notably South Korea and France.
